ST. JOHN’S, NEWFOUNDLAND – NOVEMBER 30, 2011 – Marport Deep Sea Technologies Inc., a leading developer of advanced sonar technology, announced today that the Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters in partnership with Canada’s National Research Council has named Marport as Regional Finalist in the Atlantic / Nunavut Region for the 2011 Innovation Award for New Technology.
In five regions across Canada, one award winner and two finalists were selected for the 2011 Innovation Award for New Technology. The award honours the achievements of Canadian companies whose ideas have demonstrated innovative excellence in new technologies – including new product design, commercialization success and export market diversification.
This is the fourth year in a row that Marport has been recognized having been a Regional Finalist in 2008, Regional Winner in 2009 and a Regional Finalist in 2010. The company was selected based on its underwater sonar technology – particularly its AquaPix® Synthetic Aperture Sonar product.
AquaPix® sets a new standard for high-speed, high-resolution underwater imaging. Synthetic Aperture Sonar is a type of sonar in which sophisticated signal processing of successive acoustic pings is utilized to form an image with much higher resolution than conventional sonars. This is made possible through recent advances in broadband sonar technology combined with adaptive focusing techniques similar to those used in optics, but performed in software rather than in hardware. The practical realization of Synthetic Aperture Sonar, on surface ships and underwater vehicles, is one of the most significant advances in ocean systems engineering in recent times. AquaPix® is ideal for applications where seabed image quality is critical. This step change in quality greatly facilitates the detection of small objects, such as mines and underwater improvised explosive devices; and changes in seabed texture such as that caused by oil spills.
Bruce MacRae, Marport’s Chairman said, “It’s again a tremendous honour for Marport to be named as a Regional Finalist for the 2011 Innovation Award for New Technology. Marport is an agile company that has developed a culture for creativity, innovation and new product development. With the acceleration of globalization, creativity and innovation are very important assets to create business value. Companies and economies can thrive in difficult economic times by developing new products that the world demands.”
